Mark Hawthorne

                                            Presenting a toy to Henry

I first encountered Mark Hawthorne's work through his book Bleating Hearts: The Hidden World of Animal Suffering, which is a comprehensive look at the myriad and often unseen ways animals are used by human society. Mark's other books are Striking at the Roots: A Practical Guide to Animal Activism, and most recently A Vegan Ethic: Embracing A Life Of Compassion Toward All and The Way of the Rabbit. In August of 2016 I invited Mark and his wife and fellow activist lauren Ornelas to journey a few towns south from their home to share their thoughts both individually and as a couple about the systems, habits and policies that support animals use, and what we can each do to minimize both human and animals suffering around the world.
